This is a heart-warming story about a young man with a passion for Africa and nature. A man who had the determination to walk in the ancient bushman’s footsteps and start a living in untamed Namibia. Starting out in a wetland that is known for parasites on cattle and home to various predators (lions, leopard and hyenas) it was truly a fight for survival. This remarkable man is none other than my father, Hermann Sachse.
In 1946 he bought the farm from the British Queen and in 1947, he started with nothing but his love for wildlife and the will to survive. He started by building a house (similar to that of the bushmen), producing food and digging a 60m borehole with his own hands. He struggled alone with no transport, no money and a lot to be done. He decided to name the farm Sachsenheim, which means the “Home of the Sachse family”. At the end of a long day he would sit at the waterhole and appreciate the sunset while playing his best friend, the accordion, to the wild animals. The peace he found in nature was the one thing that money can never buy.
He saw a photograph of a young lady at a neighbour and in 1956 that same lady, who would later go on to be my mother, left Germany to start her life in the bush. This was the most primitive form of living that she would ever experience. Elfriede Maria Pick gave her heart to build up Sachsenheim and learn from the bushmen. She brought up five children and was known as the Queen of the district due to her being one of the most astonishing and remarkable woman in the area with a heart of gold.
Four years after my mother passed away, my father decided to sell the farm. In 1987, I committed myself to continue with this passion for nature and through Agri-bank I bought Sachsenheim back from my father.
After 25 years we finally reached my mother’s dream: To accommodate people from all over the world.
This serves as a special thanks to you for being a part of this dream - we appreciate your support and wish you a pleasant stay.
